Official opening for Wellington’s affordable homes

A new housing scheme breathing new life into a brownfield site in the heart of Wellington has been celebrated today with an official event marking its completion.

Malthouse Court on Alexandra Road is the result of a £2.6m project to create 24 new homes for social rent. The development for leading not-for-profit provider Housing Plus Group comprises 12 one-bedroomed houses, six one-bedroomed apartments and six two-bedroomed apartments designed and built by Shropshire companies for customers of Severnside Housing.

Residents are expected to collect the keys to their new homes in the next few days. Before then, a ribbon-cutting event took place where Housing Plus Group chief executive Sarah Boden acknowledged the contribution of local councillors, architects and builders committed not only to meet the need for affordable housing in the area but to providing sustainable, greener development.

"We are really excited about this project,” said Sarah Boden. “We are providing high-quality new homes for people who will be able to live and work in this popular part of Telford & Wrekin. Malthouse Court is a fantastic example of locally focussed investment improving an area and supporting economic wellbeing.

"We are particularly proud of the consideration that has been given to the environmental impact of this scheme. As well as reducing the amount of plastic used in construction, insulation is provided well beyond the requirements of building regulations. The homes have been designed to reduce water and energy consumption and the development includes stormwater storage tanks supporting long term flood management in our community. Covered bicycle parking has also been provided, making it easier for residents to take advantage of Telford & Wrekin’s expanding network of cycle routes."

Katherine Kynaston, Telford & Wrekin Council’s assistant director of business, development and employment, said: "Telford & Wrekin Council welcomes this housing scheme, which will provide new affordable homes for local people. It is very pleasing to see Housing Plus Group regenerate this site, which is so close to the many services and facilities in Wellington Town Centre."
