Making Housing Plus Group a great place to work

People and transformation director Louise Wagstaff explains why her colleagues have been a vital part of the Group’s success over the last 12 months.

With over 500 people working for Housing Plus Group, we are a hugely significant employer in Shropshire and Staffordshire.

It’s not just the number that is impressive but the day-to-day work we do.

This has all been done in the backdrop of a great deal of change since merger in 2016 and we’re proud of the way our teams have responded. A lot of this change has been supported by our transformation forum and the HR team who have worked together really effectively on the consultation around key changes.

Numerous successes highlighted in our annual report are down to colleagues’ commitment, enthusiasm, passion and hard work. All these strengths are demonstrated in this fabulous film in which they describe why they are proud to work for the Group.

We are continually living and breathing our values. Much of our work is already life-changing and there are so many examples of people going the extra mile to raise money for charity.

There was another opportunity to raise money for charity at our internal awards ceremony last October. This also recognised teams and individuals who have been a big part of our success and it was great to see so many people there to celebrate this.

In total last year, the Group raised a magnificent £2,571 for Macmillan, the MS Society and Sands (stillbirth and neonatal death charity) but it’s not just about giving something back through fundraising. Just a few months ago the HR team volunteered as gardeners for the day at one of our retirement living communities and I know other colleagues are doing their bit too.

As well as supporting good causes, we’ve been supporting and developing existing staff. For example, we are now preparing for a renewed focus on learning and development across the Group which goes beyond training essential for a role and supports in embedding our values and behaviours. And just last year the Group has delivered 454 courses to a total of 2,893 delegates

We’ve also been helping colleagues to use their skills to take on new challenges and roles internally. For example, Adelle Parker who began work as an administrator in our Property Plus team in 2010 and recently celebrated becoming a trainee supervisor. There has been recognition of long service too including receptionist Sue McVeigh who has worked with us for an incredible 40 years.

When we are not supporting existing colleagues to be the best they can be, we’re focused on bringing in new talent with great success in employing new apprentices and growing our care business into Shropshire.

During the next 12 months, we will continue to develop a talented and dedicated team so we can build on our success and embrace new opportunities.
